Happenings

Thank you to the PTA for the Boo Hoo Breakfast they sponsored
for the kindergarten parents. The
breakfast was very much appreciated by everyone who attended.

Thank you to Title for sponsoring the take your child to school
day. Parents were able to see the
importance of being on time and their child’s busy morning schedule. Thank you to the parents who were able to
participate.

After studying tall tales, students in Tangela Polk's 5th Grade
class have written their own tall tales.

Tangela Polk’s students have also studied the characteristics of plant and animal cells, and have made their own edible plant and animal cells. Joseph Brown
Elementary School would like to thank Tim Olliphant our artist in
residence. He has been working with our
students, and they have really been enjoying his art classes. Thank you to Jacelyn Frost for writing the
grant that brought Tim Olliphant to JBES. We would also like to thank the
Tennessee Arts Commission for their awarding us the grant.

We
would like to thank Officer Tony Greene for speaking at the drug/gang awareness
breakfast.

The fourth
grade students in Jennifer Fleming and Lindsey Johnson’s rooms made plant and
animal cell models.

Thank
you to Title for sponsoring our Grandparents Day on September 30. There were 167 grandparents in attendance and
the PTA helped greet and serve our guests with Danishes, cookies, and
beverages.

Pioneer Night was October 23, 2009. The students from each home room class
decorated pumpkins for Pioneer Night. A container
was placed by each pumpkin, and the students and faculty voted for their
favorite pumpkin by placing pennies in the container. There was also a pumpkin
patch, and the students could pick a pumpkin.
The haunted house gave visitors and students a scare. Officer Tony Greene designed the haunted
house. Thank you to Greg Atwell “Crazy
Wolf” who came and taught the students about pioneer life.

Our Veterans Day Ceremony was very nice. The flag team did a great job. We enjoyed hearing Edward A. Cox former
Superintendent of Maury County Schools speak of his days as a bomber
pilot. He shared wartime pictures with
the fifth grade.

The Joseph Brown Elementary
faculty was trained in CPR and the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
on January 4, 2010. Jimmy Elliott,
Wayne Romesburg and Roy Brooks
were the instructors. All three
instructors are representatives from the Columbia Firefighters
Association. Chris Cummins helped arrange
the training for the faculty and spearheaded the donation of the AED for our
school. Ty Cobb presented the AED to Dr.
Tina Weatherford and the safety committee. We would like to thank everyone that
helped in the training and that
helped
us to get our AED.
