Dear Parents, The end of another great year at E. A. Cox Middle School is just a few weeks away. The students have worked hard to achieve the academic goals of their teachers. Most students have excelled academically and athletically; membership and participation in extracurricular activities has increased throughout the year. Overall, we are proud of our students. As we begin the last month of school, I encourage you to assist your student with completing homework, projects, and studying for tests, exams. Board policy requires middle school students to pass Language Arts, Reading, Math, and Science or Social Studies. Students who fail will be retained. However, summer school will be available and will be in session the entire month of June. Attendance the entire month is required. Important academic dates to put on your calendar :
Week of May 5—9th Science Fair Tuesday, May 6th Algebra I Gateway Exam Wednesday, May 7th 5th Grade Knowledge Bowl Thursday, May 8th 4Sight Testing—Language Arts Friday, May 9th 4Sight Testing– Math Monday, May 19th Exams in 2nd, 4th, and 6th Periods Tuesday, May 20th Exams in 1st, 3rd, and 5th Periods
To conclude the 2007—2008 school year, we have many fun activities scheduled. On Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at 6:30 P.M., we have our annual band concert featuring the Cougar 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands. Bring your family and enjoy this awesome display of talent! On Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at 9:30 A.M., we will honor our 8th graders at our annual 8th Grade Awards ceremony in the gym. On Thursday, May 15, 2008, our last school dance is scheduled from 3:00 until 4:30 P.M. Our yearly Cougar Carnival fundraiser will be held on |

Wednesday, May 21, 2008, from 9:30 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. for students of E. A. Cox Middle School. Admission is a $15.00 CASH ticket packet which will go on sale in the front lobby starting Friday, May 16, 2008. No Refunds! Finally, please review the present Maury County Dress Cody policy before shopping for school clothes. Please refrain from purchasing tops cut too low for girls or oversized, baggy or saggy pants for boys—both are examples of violation of the policy. Also, check your student every morning to be sure that he/she is appropriately dressed for school. Just as your student is required to follow the policy, Faculty and Administrators are required to enforce the policy. Thank you,
Dr. Debbie Steen
SPORTS PHYSICALS Starting with the 2008—2009 school year, the State Board of Education requires that every athlete in 7th and 9th grade receive a complete well child check up before they can participate in sports. Please contact any coach for more information.
OPPORTUNITY TO COMMENT Parents, the 2008– 2009 E. A. Cox Middle School Professional Development Plan will be available in the front office on Friday, May 9, 2008, for you to review and make comments and suggestions. Thank you for your participation and support in advance.
Please read the 2007—2008 Dress Code before you do spring shopping for school. Many girls are wearing tops that are too low and inappropriate for school. Guys are still “bagging and sagging”; remember that belts will prevent this from occurring.
Please remember that your child must pass 4 out of 5 of his or her core classes in order to be promoted to the next grade. There will be no promotions that do not meet this requirement. Please encourage good academic practices.
REMEMBER: Dismissal time is 3:00 P.M. All students should be picked up by 3:00 P.M. unless PLATO or detention has been assigned(4:00 P.M. pick up). If your child has not been picked up on time, we will notify the proper authorities in the future. If you cannot pick your child up on time after school, there is a solution. We have the YMCA after-school program available from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. in the cafeteria for a fee. Since teachers are dismissed at 3:00 P.M., this option will ensure your child is supervised and will alleviate the school calling the proper authorities.
