Fall 2008 begins a new era at Culleoka School...

Culleoka Middle School Soccer News

New Update August 13!

Schedule:  (Always wear shin guards, bring a drink, and bring a ball to practice.)

August 25:  Cox Middle School At 4pm.  We will caravan there right after school.

Everyday:  You should work on your own if we don't practice.  This isn't a punishment - we love to play!  If you are serious about helping the team and improving yourself, then...  Do your "Soccer Homework"!

First Exercise - 5 minutes:  Juggle everyday!  Left foot, right foot - alternate feet.  Then do left knee, right knee.  Then do head, knee.  Try to do as many combinations as possible.  You'll likely only be able to do 2 or 3 hits because you're alternating between left and right, but that's ok!  Try to build up to 5 or more.  Some of you may even get good enough to where you can juggle without ever stopping!

Second Exercise - 10 to 30 minutes:  Do an aerobic activity at least every other day.  This can be jogging, sprints, dribbling your soccer ball around obstacles (this one is very good!), jumping rope, or any of a million types of activities!  Find something fun that you enjoy and vary it so you don't get bored!  You could even mow the grass.  Pushing a lawnmower is great exercise.  The most important thing is to exercise.  Do it outside in the heat - we'll be practicing and playing in the heat!

Third Exercise - 20 minutes to an hour or more:  Play soccer!  Play as often as you can!  Get together with friends or family and just enjoy the game.  The game is a great teacher.  The more you play, the better you will become.

As always, use common sense.  Drink lots of water or sports drinks.  If you start to feel weak or sick, get into the shade or inside.  Don't drink soft drinks to rehydrate - they don't work for that.  Never drink those energy drinks (Vault, Red Bull, etc).  They are unhealthy for you.  When you are with the team, if you drink those type of drinks then I will not let you practice.  Again, they could be dangerous.  (You'll think you are energized and have plenty of liquids inside, but it's artificial energy and you aren't getting hydrated at all!  This is very bad!)

August 1 Update!

Its a very exciting time!  Our goals were set up today on our field.  It will be mowed this weekend and we'll use it for the very first time for soccer this Monday!  I will order uniforms Monday afternoon, August 4.  Unfortunately, if you haven't given us your size information and paid the fee by then, you'll have to pay a higher price for a single uniform order - and it may not be ready in time for the start of the season!  We are less than 2 weeks away from our first game!

Parents, please look at the "Wishlist"  on this page.  There are many things that we must have before the season and we need your help!  The school has decided to help us out with a few items!  The most important items on the list that we need at the moment are the practice goal and a field striper.

If you can purchase one of these for the team, let me know.  The "ScoreSports" items are special pricing that we can only get by using a purchase order through the school account.  If you want to purchase something for the team through Scoresports.com, please bring the money to the school and give it to Melody in the office.  Tell her specifically which item you want the money to buy.  There is a shipping cost involved with each item although I have no idea what that charge may be.

As always...  Thank you!

We are slowly but surely getting the field ready.  Thanks to the Farmer and Stofel families, we have some very nice looking goals on "long term loan" from the Columbia Soccer Association!   They've been sandblasted, primered, painted, and set up on our field as of August 1!  Many thanks to these families and to the Columbia Soccer Association!

Boys players:  Sign up to play CSA soccer this fall.  This will be wonderful practice for you to be effective next spring.   Many of Maury County's best soccer players started out playing there!

Girls players:  You may sign up to play CSA soccer also this fall, and of course you should play in the spring.  You can't play CSA and school soccer at the same time, but as soon as our season is over, you can immediately join a CSA team and still have 4 or 5 games remaining plus the Khol's Cup.  This would be a great thing to do for your own development, plus it would be fun!

IMPORTANT!!!   If you can help us with mowing the field (many thanks to Cindy and Danny Auville, and Bobby & Trace Hurley for mowing our field!), send me an email letting me know what dates are good for you to do this (for example: any after June 20th, only on Saturdays, etc) and I'll try to make out an informal schedule.  That way we can spread the task out among those who can help and we can make sure the field is mowed when it is most needed.

As always, I very much appreciate the great support we've been getting for the teams.  I will do my best to try to organize this support so that we can get Culleoka Soccer off to a great start!

About the Physicals...

All student athletes must complete a physical before the season starts!  7th and 9th Graders must take a "comprehensive" physical.  The free ones and the bone and joint clinic will not work for this.  Forms are in the office.  You can use your primary care physician for the comprehensive physical.

For the other grades, if you can make in on the dates listed at the top of this page, the physicals are provided free of charge by the Mid-Tennessee Bone and Joint Clinic at 1050 N. James Campbell Blvd.  If you can't attend at these times, then you will need to make arrangements with your primary care physicians for the physicals.

Wear shorts and t-shirts, bring the signed form, and do not do any physical activity for an hour before the physical.  Typically, the physical will last less than an hour.  If you need another copy of the form, go to www.mtbj.net and look under "forms".  I suggest you make your own copy of the completed physical form and keep the original - things get lost all the time.  Last year my son's physical disappeared and I had to find another copy just a day or two before the first game!

Our History...

The Culleoka Middle School Girls soccer team had it's first tryout Tuesday, May 6, 2008.  19 girls arrived to give it their best to make the team.  Overall, we had a very successful first meeting with the team and team parents.  Pictures below!

The Culleoka Middle School Boys soccer team had it's first tryout Monday, May 12, 2008.  We had 14 boys working hard to make the team!  As with the girls team, it was a very successful first meeting with the team and parents.  If anyone has any pictures of the practice and doesn't mind sharing, send them to me and I'll put them up here!  My email address is below.

Goals were set up on our field on August 1, 2008!  These on long term loan from CSA.  The goals have been cleaned, painted, and moved here by the Farmer and Stofel families!

Our first week of practice was August 4th through the 8th.  On Friday the 8th, several players from the high school came to our practice and played with us.  We were able to have our first full field, 11 vs 11 scrimmage game.  All the boys who showed up have had a great deal of soccer experience.  Our girls did well against them and it was a great learning opportunity.  Even though we lost the game, afterwards nearly everyone was asking when we were going to play them again!  Next Friday!

August 12 - Uniform day!  Woo Hoo!

We played our first games on August 16, 2008.  Our first opponent was Whitthorne Middle School.   They were an experienced and very talented team and we were defeated 8-0.  The last game was against South Giles Middle School \.  We improved our play quite a bit, but we were tired and South Giles was also a very good team - loss of 3 - 0.  The second game was against Richland Middle School and Culleoka enjoyed our very first on the field victory 2 - 1!  Emily R. scored our first goal!
