About Us

College Hill is the place for students who have been assigned to the alternative school program. The principal of College Hill is Mrs. Janet Hanvy, she and a trained staff of teachers and “teaching assitants” will help the students to make their stay here positive. Rather than making this seem like a punishment, they help the student realize why they made their bad decisions and how they can become better people in school and in their community.

Head start is also located here on the bottom floors of the building.

College Hill was the elementary and high school for the African American community in Columbia, Tennessee  during the era of segregation. Although it received less than its fair share of  material resources, it was graced with outstanding principals and teachers. Two of the most noticeable principals were Professor J.H. Kelley and Professor Robert Johnson, father of the civil right leader Lyman Johnson.

This school has contributed much to our town since its establishment by helping African Americans get a good education and helping students today find ways of making better choices.

There is also a great scholarship program provided by the  Horace O. porter association that greatly help students achieve their dreams of going to college. The Horace O. Porter scholarship program is open to all seniors of Maury County Schools who wish to apply for the awards. School guidance counselors at all Maury County Public High schools should be contacted for details.
