Text Box: Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge
 
The MPHS Automotive Technology team of students Colin Holt, Gaylon Richardson, Steven Eakes, Shay Jones, and Jacob Hyatt placed 5th in the state in the “Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge” February 28th at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville.  MPHS Automotive Technology teacher Jim Netherland stated it was a good experience and a good time, and he is looking forward to next year’s competition.
Text Box: National Beta Club Scholarship Semifinalist
 
Congratulations to senior Ginny Benefield, daughter of Rusty and Wendy Benefield, on being announced as a semifinalist for the National Beta Club Scholarship.  Ginny was selected out of 700 other students to be in the top 265 competing for the 217 scholarships available.  The scholarships will be for no less than $1,000, with 5 students receiving either $4,000, $6,000, $8,000, $10,000, or $15,000.  The scholarships will be announced in late March.

Text Box: Junior Class Pancake Breakfast

The junior class will be sponsoring a pancake breakfast as a fundraiser for the Jr/Sr Prom.  The pancake breakfast will be held at Applebee’s in Columbia on Saturday, April 10th.  Juniors will be selling tickets for $6 prior to the breakfast and tickets will also be available at the door.  Please support our 2010 Junior/Senior Prom!

Members of the Future Business Leaders of America organization collected more than 140 gently used coats to donate to needy families in Maury County.  Coats were distributed during the month of December by the Servant’s Heart Ministry of Columbia.  Twenty-one members are currently preparing for the Regional Conference and Skills Competition to be held on February 8th at MTSU.  All members are collecting dimes in support of FBLA’s national campaign to support the March of Dimes, can tabs for The Ronald McDonald House, and gently used backpacks for Youth Villages.  All contributions are appreciated; and special thanks for supporting our World’s Finest Chocolates fundraiser!

Congratulations to the 2009-10 MPHS Teacher of the Year, Mr. John Welch.  He was recently selected by his fellow teachers and staff members for this prestigious award.  Mr. Welch teaches English III and IV.  He is in his fourth year at MPHS and said, “I enjoy teaching at MPHS.  The administration creates a great work environment and the students are the best.”

Mr. Webb Williams recently received the “Athletic Director of the Year” for District 6 from the TSSAA Board of Control members Bryan True and Mike Tatum during the A.F. Bridges Awards ceremony.  Mr. Williams is entering his ninth year as the Athletic Director for Mt. Pleasant High School.  He teaches business classes, serves as coach of the tennis team and is advisor to the Interact Club.

Text Box: Academic Decathlon State Competion

Congratulations to the 8 students that competed last weekend at the Academic Decathlon State Competition at Austin Peay State University.
Rachel Cannon received a silver medal in Interview.  Jonathan Bradford received a copper medal in Interview.  Brett Bassham received a bronze medal in Math.  Lindsey Benson received a $1000 scholarship for being the highest scoring senior on the team, and Rachel Cannon received a $300 scholarship for being the 2nd highest scoring senior on the team.  The team placed 9th in the state and won a spot at On-line Nationals in April.
Text Box: 2010 American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Medal Winner

MPHS is pleased to announce that Amber Stewart is the 2010 American Legion Auxiliary’s Amercanism Medal winner.  She was nominated by the faculty of MPHS based on her qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service to others.  Amber is the daughter of Leslie Sarge Stewart, Jr., and is an active member of Beech Hill Church of Christ in Mt. Pleasant.  She is the Vice-President of the MPHS FFA and is active in the Beta Club, FCCLA, HOSA, Interact, FBLA, and FCA.  Amber was nominated for the Most Dependable and Most Courteous Senior Superlative by her classmates.  She placed 11th in her graduating class and plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin, majoring in Animal Science.  Amber aspires to be a Veterinarian when she graduates.
