McDowell Hosts Family Literacy Night/Book Fair

A Riverside "Thanks and Giving" was recently held at Riverside Elementary School. The Reading Committee along with the Parental Involvement Group held a Chili Supper Monday, November 24. Families attended a reading activity in the classroom that culminated with a free chili dinner as a "Thanks" for such wonderful parental help. The "Giving" portion involved the collection of canned foods items donated by students, faculty, and staff. Mrs. Kristie Cheek's 4th graders are pictured with the pyramid of goods that will be donated to our local Harvest Share.

Game Night is a Success at McDowell Elementary

McDowell parents and students have always been asked to participate in Pull-the-Plug Night, and many have participated in the past several years by turning the television off and doing other fun activities at home.  However, this year parents were asked to come to school and participate in Game Night.  It was a great night of fun filled with lots of board games and popcorn.

Randolph Howell Elementary First Graders and Parents Write Poetry Together

Each month First Graders at Howell Elementary are asked to participate in a Parent Involvement Project.  For the month of September, First Grade chose Poetry.  They chose a fall theme (pumpkins, leaves, bats, apples, scarecrows, harvest, candy corns, etc.) and wrote a poem together with their parents.

Riverside Elementary Pre-K Students Invite Parents to Picnic

Through-hands-on cross curricular activities, Riverside's Pre-K students explored the world of apples.  Over the course of 2 weeks, the students made 16 apple pies, homemade applesauce, applesauce play dough and many apple crafts while practicing skills such as colors, counting, sorting, graphing, pre-reading tools, and vocabulary building.

To complete their study, with the help of our cafeteria staff, we baked and served our pies after a picnic lunch on the school lawn.  There were over 33 parents and siblings that attended.

Mt. Pleasant Elementary Hosts Harry Potter Night

Mt. Pleasant Elementary School was enchanted on Monday, October 22 by  the schoolwide program “Harry Potter and the Quest for the Five Elements.”  Professor McGonagall welcomed parents and students to Hogwarts School.  Students were sorted into the four houses while their parents signed in and received Hogwarts Journals.

Students participated in four sessions:  Wand-making, tattooing, quizzing, and amulet-making.  Everyone attended the Bertie Bott’s bean tasting session and chose their favorite flavors.  Parents received an element of reading at each session:   Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension.

Faculty and staff members dressed as Hogwarts professors and conducted the sessions. Selections from the first Harry Potter novel, The Sorcerer’s Stone, were read throughout the evening.  The movie played in the library.  Other attractions were the Lady in the Portrait and Moaning Myrtle in the third grade bathrooms.  Photo opportunities were available in the gymnasium with Dumbledore, Professor Umbridge, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and Harry Potter.  Various points of interest about the book were displayed in the hallways.
