Parents Link

Whitthorne Middle School consists of sixth, seventh and eighth grade general education and special education classes.  The students’ school year is 180 days.  In 2003-2004 the county adopted a balanced calendar which consists of four nine-week grading periods and three two-week breaks. During fall break, spring break and a portion of the summer break, extended learning programs are offered to students needing academic assistance.  The school day for students begins at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. for a seven-hour day.

There are 67 classrooms, two gymnasiums, library, computer lab, tutorial lab, and band room. The cafeteria seats 432 students for lunch and serves as the morning bus room. An area that was formerly a library has been divided into three sections. One area is for the Technology Engineering Education class, one area for Speech classes, and one area for In-School Suspension.

Curriculum Offerings

All students take the five basic subjects of reading/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Class periods are fifty-five minutes long and are a part of each day's schedule.

A department consisting of ten teachers provides mathematics instruction for WMS students. The mathematics classes are leveled, but flexible grouping allows students to be moved when they need different placements during the year. Pre-algebra is offered to students in the seventh grade.  Regular mathematics, pre-algebra and algebra are offered in the eighth grade.
