WELCOME TO THIRD GRADE!

Dear Parents,
I am very excited about working with you and your child this year. Below you will find a few things that you need to know to help make this a productive year.

Assignment Books

Each child will have an assignment book. They will be responsible for writing down their assignments each day. You are to check the assignment book each night, and check to see that each assignment is completed neatly. If you see that the answers are incorrect, ask your child to review the work (don't answer for them). If the answers are still incorrect, please be assured that we will review the work together in class. Each assignment should be placed behind the correct divider in their notebook. After you have checked to see that the assignments are "neat and complete", sign or initial the assignment book. Write me a note in the assignment book as needed, and I will do the same. If homework is incomplete, it will be completed at recess break. Three points will also be taken off their homework grade if work is not completed. (Each student will start out with a 100). The assignment book is a very important communication tool between home and school!

Homework
A typical third grader should not have more than 30-40 minutes of homework each night. There will be time throughout the day to work on assignments, as well as a 30- minute study time each afternoon at 2:30. If they come home with a lot of work, please ask how they are spending their study time. Once students leave my classroom in the afternoons to go home, they will not be permitted to return. They are responsible for having everything they need packed up before they leave my room. (I will give several reminders). There are many instances when I am not in the room because of afternoon duties. Take Home Folders Children will have a plastic folder inside their notebooks with 2 pockets. One side will be for notes going home, and the other side will have graded work for you to review and keep at home. You do not need to send the work back to school unless I have indicated for you to sign and return.

Absences
If your child is absent, please have a child bring home their work, or call the office and I will have their work sent for you to pick up. It is very important that your child does not get behind. Graded work will be completed in the classroom when they return.

Lunch Money
This year the lunchroom is taking lunch money only on Mondays and Tuesdays. Please send it in an envelope with your child's name, my name, and the amount that is inside. Any money you send to the office has to be kept separate from the lunch money. We cannot make change, so please send the correct amount, whether it be check or cash.

Birthday Parties
This year we will not be having school "birthday parties" in second or third grades. If you would like, you may send a "snack" for the class to school with your child or you may drop it off at the office. We will acknowledge your child's special day and have the snack at a convenient time. We suggest items such as doughnuts, cookies, fruit snacks, or any individually wrapped snacks. Please do not send cupcakes, cakes, or drinks. Please send a note to let me know if you plan to send something.

Snacks and Ice Cream
Students may bring a healthy snack from home (cheese, apple slices, etc.) If they choose to purchase a snack from the lunchroom, it must be done before they come to the classroom in the morning. Most of the lunchroom snacks consist of chips or cookies. Snacks will be eaten around the time of our 9:30 bathroom break. Ice cream is bought during recess time when we are able to go outside. If we have an indoor recess, we do not buy ice cream. Children also will not be able to purchase ice cream if homework assignments are incomplete.

Chorus
We will have chorus practice every Thursday from 2:30 - 3:10. Mr. Tidwell will send you information about this. Every child has the opportunity to join. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions, comments, or concerns.

I am free for conferences after 3:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. You may also call the office at 380-2872 and leave a number, and I will return your call when I get a free moment. My home email address is:

Every third grade class receives instruction in paragraph writing.  I meet with each class once a week.  We are starting out with learning how to construct a good sentence.  Then we will work our way up to main ideas (topic sentences) and detail sentences. This is a non-graded class.  I hope it will be both beneficial and enjoyable for your child.

I teach Social Studies to each third grade class twice a week.  The third grade Social Studies text will be used, but the TN. State Standards will be the focus.  Click below to see what skills will be addressed the first nine weeks.
