WELCOME TO THIRD GRADE!

 Dear Parents,

I am very excited about working with you and your child.  Below you will find a few things that you need to know to help make this a great year.

Assignment Book
Each child will have an assignment book.  They will be responsible for writing down their assignments each day.  You are to check the assignment book each night, and check to see that each assignment is completed neatly.  Do not check to see if the answers are right.  I will go over the assignments in class the next day, and your child will be expected to correct any mistakes they make and hopefully learn from them.  If I find that your child is not trying to do their best in completing their work, and they are just putting anything down to be finished, I will then ask that you check their work each night and have them correct it.  I find that children pay closer attention in class if they do not know that all their answers are already correct.  Also, each assignment should be placed behind the correct divider in their notebook.  After you have checked to see that the assignments are “neat and complete”, sign their assignment book.  Feel free to write me notes in the assignment book if needed.  If I check the notebook for assignments and find something missing or incomplete, I will write you a note in red ink, and your child will complete the work at playtime.  If the assignments are complete, I will stamp the assignment book.  These books are a very important communication tool between home and school.

Assignments
I don’t give homework.  I make assignments.  I give students time throughout the day to work on their assignments, as well as a thirty-minute study time each afternoon.  If they do not complete their work at school, they must complete it at home.  They have just given themselves homework!  If they come home with a lot of work, ask them how they are spending their study time.  Once students leave my classroom in the afternoons to go home, they will not be allowed to return.  They are responsible for having everything they need packed up before they leave my room.  Each student will have a “study buddy”.  This is the name and phone number of a child in our room that they can call to get assignments if needed.

 Take Home Folders

Children have a plastic pocket folder in the front of their notebooks.  This is to be reviewed each night by both parent and child.  All graded work as well as notes from the office will be placed in this folder.  Remove all work each night.

Absences
If your child is absent, please have a child bring home their work, or call the office and I will have their work sent up for you to pick up.  It is very important that they keep up, and this will also keep them from being “overwhelmed” when they do return to school.  Morning Work is always completed at school and will not be sent home.

Lunch Money
This year the lunchroom is taking lunch money only on Mondays and Tuesdays.  Please send it in an envelope with your child’s name and my name on the outside.

Birthday Parties

This year we will not be having school “birthday parties” in second or third grades.  If you would like, you may send a “snack” for the class to school with your child and leave it in the office.  We will acknowledge your child’s special day and have the snack at a convenient time.  We suggest items such as doughnuts, cookies, fruit snacks, or any individually wrapped snacks.  No cakes or cupcakes, please.  Please send a note to let me know if you plan to send something.

 Snacks and Ice Cream

Students may bring a snack from home or purchase one in the lunchroom.  If they choose to purchase one, it must be done before they come to our classroom in the morning.  Snacks will be eaten while they are working on their Morning Work between 8:00 and 8:45.

Ice cream is bought during recess time when we are able to go outside.  If we have an indoor recess, we do not buy ice cream.

Jackets

If you child is “cold-natured” they will need to bring a light jacket or sweater that can be kept in their locker.  I keep our room “cool” even in the winter.  Students tend to get sleepy if the room is kept too hot.

Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions, comments, or concerns.  I am free for conferences after 3:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  You may also call the office and leave a number, and I will return you call when I get a free moment.

                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                               Wanda Latta
